How Mechanical Movements Work

A mechanical watch is powered by a coiled mainspring. You wind it — either by hand or through the motion of your wrist (automatic) — and that stored energy drives a series of gears that move the hands.

There are no batteries. No circuits. Just engineering and physics.

The appeal is real: a mechanical movement is a miniature machine, assembled by hand, with hundreds of components working in sync. The sweeping second hand, the subtle rotor spin on an automatic — these are details that quartz can't replicate.

The trade-offs: Mechanical watches lose or gain a few seconds per day. They need servicing every 5–7 years. And they cost more to produce, which means higher price tags across the board.

How Quartz Movements Work

Durability. Both are durable, but quartz movements have fewer moving parts, which means fewer things that can break. Mechanical movements are more sensitive to shocks and magnetism.

Longevity. Here's where mechanical fights back. A well-maintained mechanical watch can last generations — your grandchildren can wear it. Quartz movements have a finite lifespan tied to circuit board degradation, though we're talking decades, not years.

Cost. Entry-level mechanical watches start around $200–500 for something respectable. Quality quartz starts under $100. At every price point, quartz gives you more features and accuracy per dollar.
